The FF394 header fits big block Ford FE engines in the 1961-66 Ford Thunderbird.

The FF394 is our tightest-fitting header for Ford FE engines and may fit other vehicles and custom-built applications. Please compare the images and dimensions provided to the available space in the engine bay for compatibility with other vehicle applications. For example, the FF394 is compatible with some front clip grafts from the Ford Crown Victoria.

    The headers are well made and look great.

    WARNING!!! The Collector Reducers were not deburred or filed. Both ends are EXTREMILY SHARP! Be careful, they will slice you clean open!

Ford manufactured the FE cylinder heads in three variations of the exhaust manifold mounting bolt layout. It is essential to know which one you have to ensure that you order and receive a header set with the correct flange. Please read below for information on the variations and compatibility.

  1. The most common is the standard, or 8-bolt flange. This cylinder uses a basic two-bolt-per-port (top and bottom) design. This is used on both factory (OEM) and aftermarket cylinder heads.
  2. The next design is the 16-bolt, or Cobra Jet (CJ) mounting pattern. This features four bolts per exhaust port opening and provides the best sealing or clamping force.
  3. Last, and the least common, is the 14-bolt GT cylinder head layout. And to complicate matters, Ford manufactured cylinder heads with two different versions of the 14-bolt layout. One design is similar to the CJ cylinder head but lacks the two center bolts below the two center ports. The second design adds another variation, where the two outer bolts on the top row are lower than those in the center, as shown in the image graphic below.

Compatibility:

  • 8-bolt flange headers fit standard 8-bolt and 16-bolt CJ cylinder heads. If used on the CJ heads, the installer cannot take advantage of the additional two bolts per port.
  • 16-bolt CJ flange headers fit CJ, standard 8-bolt (open, unused mounting holes will be visible), and GT heads if the outer top row bolts are inline, and not lower. There will be two unused bolt holes in the flange under the two center ports.
  • 14-bolt GT flange for cylinder heads with lower outer bolts is ONLY compatible with these heads and nothing else.

When ordering headers for the Ford FE engine, you will see the part number change based on the selection(s) from the dropdown menus. It is crucial to choose the correct flange design for the application.

Sanderson Header WarrantyLimited 5-Year General Warranty

Sanderson Street Rod Headers strives to supply our customers with the highest quality parts and services in the street rod industry. In keeping with this, we warrant and will repair or replace, at our option, after an inspection in our facility, any of our products that we found to have failed due to defects in either material or workmanship.  This warranty is activated by the return of the Warranty Card enclosed with every pair of headers. It is effective for FIVE YEARS * from the date of purchase, as indicated on the original invoice.

This Warranty does not cover products that fail due to improper motor tuning, alteration, disassembly, or damage caused by racing, misuse, neglect, abuse, improper installation, and/or accident or when used on applications that were not designed or approved. We are specifically not responsible for the costs of removal, installation, transportation, destruction of other components, inconvenience, loss of time, or other personal damages or for any other associated costs, including the application of aftermarket coatings applied by others. Sanderson Street Rod Headers shall not be liable for any and all consequential damages occasioned by the breach of any written or implied warranty pertaining to this sale in excess of the purchase price of the product(s) as found on the original invoice.

WRAPPING HEADERS WITH THERMAL TAPE VOIDS THE WARRANTY.

* Extremely compact header designs that locate the collector close to the exhaust ports are very sensitive to engine tuning. Improper air/fuel mix or timing of ignition and/or valvetrain can cause early failure due to excessive heat. For this reason,  part numbers CC2 and CC3 are offered with a two-year warranty period only. This includes header sets that utilize one of these headers as part of the set (part numbers CC4 and CC14, for example). The compact header side will hold a 2-year warranty. All other Warranty conditions apply.

Installation Notes

  1. The Patented Leak-Free Design on Sanderson Headers provides the only leak-free flange design on the market … Do Not Attempt To Use Flange Gaskets! The raised flange on tube-style Sanderson Headers will buckle the gasket during tightening and cause a leak!  It is only OK to use a header gasket on the cast-series header sets (QP1000 and QP2000) Click here for the header installation procedure.
  2. Sanderson Headers are NOT emissions legal on pollution-controlled motor vehicles. It is the purchaser’s responsibility to verify local regulations for compliance.
  3. Wrapping Sanderson Headers with ANY thermal tape voids the header warranty. Our Aluminized Ceramic Coating is the best thermal protection for your headers and is available for every Sanderson Header. Ford FE Starter

If the vehicle has the larger Ford “coffee can” starter (common on convertibles but found on other applications) or other larger or incompatibly clocked starters, it must be replaced with the appropriately sized starter or preferably an aftermarket mini-starter.

A Powermaster #9506 or compatible mini starters is a good choice for an aftermarket replacement.
